PRP Procedures for Equine

Platelet-rich plasma, or PRP, is a way to use a horse’s own blood to treat many common chronic problems. If you live in Jacksonville, FL, and have been searching online for “horse care near me,” Jacksonville Equine Associates is here to help.

Conditions Treated with PRP Injections

PRP injections for equine care have been proven to help with tendon and ligament lesions, bowed tendons, joint inflammation, and osteoarthritis, in the fetlocks and other areas, for horses, mules, and donkeys. One of the biggest advantages of PRP therapy for osteoarthritis is that equines often do not need to go on corticosteroid medication, which can cause bad side effects.

What Are Platelets?

Platelets are tiny particles in the bloodstream that come together whenever they encounter a wound to form a clot. Platelets also release growth factors to help the wound or swelling heal. They help speed up the healing process by bringing more cells to the wound site and having them divide faster. This promotes the formation of new healthy tissue rather than scar tissue.

How PRP Injections Work

One of our highly skilled equine vets will come to your barn or equestrian center. Your horse may need to be sedated and given a local anesthetic, depending on how much pain it is in.

About 16 ml of your horse’s blood will be withdrawn and then separated by a machine called a centrifuge. The platelets and some plasma will be separated from the rest of the blood. A portable ultrasound will be used to find the right injection site. The resulting mixture is then injected right into the wound site or area of inflammation or arthritis.

Injections are given about once every three to four weeks.

Side Effects

There are very few reported side effects of PRP therapy in horses, mules, and donkeys. There may be minor bleeding at the injection site—this is normal. If you do notice any other issues after injection, call your vet right away.
